The GWA was treated to a genuine Night at the Movies on Wednesday 4th October, as 450 Wellingtonians put their best feet forward in a truly stunning House Dance Competition. The first week of October saw each house compete in two categories – Large group and Small group – with a remarkable 860 pupils taking part in the keenly contested heats. Asked to select a classic or well-known movie, and then express it in Dance, the houses came up with vast array of choices from Pixar classics such as The Incredibles through to Top Gun, The Greatest Showman, Back to the Future, and perhaps inevitably, Barbie.

Creativity and ingenuity was the order of the day, and the finalists treated us to flying acrobatic skills, moments of real artistic expression, cohesive teamwork and immaculate timing. At times it was hard to remember the evening was entirely generated by the pupils themselves, such was the professionalism on show.

Congratulations to all the competitors and special praise to the Combermere, triumphant in the Large Group trophy with their inspired interpretation of Dirty Dancing, and the Picton, who lifted the Small Group with their sensitive rendition of Interstellar.

However, the real winner was Wellington Dance itself, the joyous success of the evening proving beyond all doubt that Dance is an integral part of a Wellington education for all pupils – boys and girls alike.
