Earlier this week, we had the privilege of welcoming pupils, parents, and staff from a host of prep schools to this year’s U11 Prep School Rugby Festival. The day was filled with fantastic displays of skill, athleticism, and teamwork, but as always, the highlight was the exceptional sportsmanship demonstrated by all the young players.

It’s heartening to think that many of these talented pupils will return to Bigside in the years ahead, either playing for or against Wellington College teams.

We extend our heartfelt thanks to all the schools who participated, ensuring this event remains one of the most eagerly anticipated and well-attended festivals of its kind.

Master James Dahl shared his reflections on this wonderful tradition:

“Our annual Prep School Rugby Festival has been a key feature of the sporting calendar for many years, and it remains a joy to watch the next generation of rugby talent come through.

Sport teaches us invaluable life lessons: how to win with humility, lose with grace, work as a team, and bounce back from adversity. It shapes character, instils discipline, and fosters resilience—qualities that transcend the pitch and enrich our lives. Long may this tradition continue!”

Dan Pratt, Director of Sport, echoed these sentiments, celebrating the day’s success:

“The U11 Prep School Rugby Festival is a true highlight of our rugby calendar. This year was no exception and despite the incredible overnight rain and wet start to the day, there was again outstanding rugby skills on display and excellent sporting behaviour throughout. While there was no overall victor—true to the spirit of the festival—all 12 participating teams brought their energy, enthusiasm, and passion for the game. A big thank you to everyone who made the day possible, and here’s to many more festivals to come!”

A special thank you to the staff, referees, and grounds team who worked tirelessly to make this day possible, ensuring every participant had a fantastic experience.
