How to write a business plan, generate sales and manage your cash flow are not normally on the curriculum in Year 9.

But a small group of students will spend six days over the course of this year discussing those topics as part of a pilot project launched this week.

The Future Founders project was created by Wellington College’s Head of Business Simon Roundell, Amanda Thomson, founder of drinks company Thomson & Scott, and members of the Wellington Community.

It is working with four students from the college alongside two pupils from Tomlinscote School in Frimley, one from Easthampstead Park School in Bracknell and one from Sandhurst School.

Amanda said: “It was fantastic to see all eight of our future founders being so engaged and working so well together. A special thanks must go to the three outside mentors who gave up their time from their own businesses to help inspire the students with real life experience of what it takes to start up a business.”

The external pupils were selected to take part in the project by the Wellington College Learning Alliance, which collaborates with state schools to create extra opportunities for their students.

The Future Founders group will meet twice a term in Spring, Summer and Autumn 2023 to work on joint projects with support from business mentors and outside speakers. The sessions will cover the generation of business ideas, making a business plan, trade games, cash flow, generating sales, social media and marketing and more.
