The nationwide trend which has seen an increasing number of UK school leavers explore the possibility of further education in the US has certainly been evident at Wellington over the past decade and around 20 Wellingtonians move on to universities and colleges on the other side of the Atlantic every year.
In order to best prepare our pupils for the possibility of further education in the US, the College has put in place a support structure unrivalled in UK schools. Our specialist US universities advisers spend one day per week at the College, giving any Wellingtonian who is thinking about applying to US institutions a regular opportunity to discuss any aspect of the process, from SAT and ACT preparation to scholarships which might be available. Just as importantly, Wellington runs an annual SAT and ACT preparation course to equip potential candidates with all the skills and support they might need for this element of the process. In addition, the College is now a registered SAT and ACT testing centre which means that our pupils can complete every single aspect of the application procedure without ever leaving Wellington.
Once it becomes possible for school groups to visit US universities, Wellingtonians will again be able to spend a week in the US on an intense programme of College visits, alternating annually from West to East Coast. Travel restrictions permitting, we hope our next trip will be in October 2022. In the meantime, we are taking full advantage of the online universities fairs and open days that are available.
US universities at which Wellingtonians were offered places last year: Harvard, Yale, Cornell, University of Chicago, Columbia, NYU, Berkeley, Virginia and UCLA amongst many others. With such a strong track-record of success, any Wellingtonians contemplating university in America can be sure that they will receive unparalleled support, preparation and advice.
