The Stanley
The Stanley
The HM
Gareth Carr was educated in South Africa and first spent time in the United Kingdom as a professional hockey player in 2003. After various spells in the UK, his travels led him to Wellington College to run the hockey programme.
Whilst playing professionally he represented South Africa (89 caps, 52 goals) and attended the World Cup and Commonwealth Games both held in Delhi in 2010. In addition to coaching hockey over the past twelve years, Gareth has tutored in three different houses across all year groups and held the position of Assistant Housemaster of the Hardinge for seven years before taking on the position of Housemaster of the Raglan in December 2018 which he held for six years before moving across to the Stanley. Having previously taught PE, Gareth now teaches a large majority of the Wellbeing syllabus at Wellington.
Gareth is supported in his role by his wife, Bethan, who has taught Art and History of Art at Wellington and been part of the College community for the past eighteen years. She too has a vast amount of pastoral experience as a former Senior Assistant Housemistress and AHM of the Wellesley and the Orange. Gareth and Bethan are kept busy at home by their two boys Oliver (11) and Joshua (9) who currently attend Wellington Prep. Keiko their lovable Vizsla, is also a frequent visitor to the house.
Gareth’s primary focus revolves around building a culture of respect, kindness and inclusivity in this wonderful house full of immensely talented young men.
The House
The Stanley is one of Wellington’s ‘out-college’ boys Houses but is superbly located in the College campus, close to all academic departments and yet slightly removed from the main College. The Stanley has its own grounds as well as a floodlit all-weather court and a newly refurbished library and games room in the garden. The House also has its own dining room, in which boys eat breakfast and dinner – it is a very special feature. The Stanley is home to 63 boys living over three floors. The Third Form share rooms of four at the top of the House, in ‘heaven’. The Fourth and Fifth form live in single rooms on the second floor, in ‘main passage’, and the ground floor, or ‘hell’, houses the senior boys whose rooms are not with the other year-groups around the House. The whole House was refurbished over the summer of 2016. The Stanley enjoys huge success across academic, sporting and cultural pursuits and prides itself on its House spirit, as well as the easy and friendly relations between the different year-groups. There are numerous parent socials throughout the year and the aim of all of the House staff is to provide the boys a safe home to allow them to flourish at Wellington, and to discover their full potential for life after Wellington.
