On 6 May, pupils from the Stanley and Lynedoch at Wellington College joined forces to undertake a 24-hour non-stop charity bike ride. Their aim was to support Carwarden House Community School, a charity that holds a special place in their hearts, by raising funds for a staycation trip to London.

During their time at Wellington, the group formed a close bond with Carwarden House, a school and sixth form for 150 young people aged 11 to 19 with complex learning and additional needs. Working with Carwarden House, the group has been deeply inspired by the joy the children bring to those around them, which they have personally witnessed.

Casper, one of the participating pupils, shared his thoughts on the experience: “The ride had its ups and downs. A definite highlight was when all six of us — Casper, James, Joe, Josh, Max and Ollie — cheered each other on throughout the day. We also had boys from different year groups coming out to support us. It was heartwarming to see everyone come together for such a worthy cause. On the other hand, a low point was the night shift where you were alone with the bike waiting for your turn. However, the feeling of stepping off the bike at 3 am and passing it on to the next person was incredible and made up for it. Finally, completing the ride the next morning at 8 am, alongside Mr Sutton, Mrs Cantwell and the rest of the team, was also very special. Oh, and another downside was the discomfort of the seat. If we do this again, we might need to consider more comfortable options.”

Despite the challenges, the group achieved an incredible feat, covering a distance of 629.2km within the 24 hours. They also surpassed their fundraising target by more than double the initial goal.

Congratulations to everyone involved in this remarkable achievement!
