Wellington College’s GWA auditorium was brought to life with an enchanting evening of music, blending choral and orchestral brilliance. The collaboration between the Wellington College community and the Crowthorne Choral Society, a tradition spanning over 50 years, continues to deliver magical musical experiences, and this year was no exception.
The evening began with Vaughan Williams’ Serenade to Music. The tender interplay of text and melody was exquisitely captured, with soloists Esmé Ellis, Alicia Hunt, Jordan Berry, and James Gooding showcasing their impressive vocal talents. Their rich voices, complemented by the orchestra, paid a fitting tribute to the piece’s roots in Shakespearean poetry, eliciting deep emotional resonance from the audience.
This was followed by two captivating concerto performances. Sarah K’s rendition of the first movement of Saint-Saëns’ Violin Concerto No. 3 was a masterclass in virtuosity and sensitivity. Her command of the chromatic intricacies and the emotional depth of the piece left a lasting impression. Momo X, in the first movement of Rachmaninoff’s Piano Concerto No. 2, brought the beloved work to life with both technical prowess and emotive expression. His delivery of the sweeping themes and intricate passages demonstrated a maturity beyond his years.
The second half featured Fauré’s Requiem, performed with profound beauty and precision. Freddie G and Flo H offered stunning solo performances, their voices bringing warmth and clarity to the Offertorium and Pie Jesu, respectively. The choral ensemble, supported by the Wellington College Sinfonia, delivered an evocative rendition, with highlights including the transcendent In Paradisum and the powerful Agnus Dei.
Under Simon Williamson’s direction, the concert celebrated both tradition and talent, with moments of sheer musical brilliance that transported the audience. The addition of Wellington parents’ choir members further emphasised the spirit of community that underpins this long-standing collaboration.
This concert not only showcased the exceptional abilities of young musicians and seasoned performers but also reaffirmed the enduring power of music to connect and inspire. Bravo to all involved for an unforgettable evening!
