World Book Day is a wonderful celebration of the written word and its ability to inspire, educate and entertain. On this special day, people all over the world come together to share their love of books and reading. It’s a day to celebrate the power of literature and to encourage people to explore the world through the written word.
Books have the power to transport us to new worlds, to teach us new things, and to connect us with people and ideas we may never have encountered otherwise. They allow us to escape our everyday lives and delve into the imaginations of others, immersing ourselves in new perspectives and experiences.
During February we welcomed Dan Freedman, author of the bestselling book ‘Unstoppable’, to give two talks to our Third Form pupils. The whole year group was given a copy to read in advance of Dan’s visit which generated a real buzz and fuelled plenty of discussion during the visits.
One pupil commented:
“It was a thrilling read and I started it on Saturday morning and had finished by that evening. It is exactly the genre that I like! I’m going to tell my friends to read it.”
Reading also has countless benefits for our brains and our overall wellbeing. It has been shown to reduce stress, improve focus and concentration, and even increase empathy and understanding of others. Books can provide a sense of comfort and companionship, especially during times of loneliness or uncertainty.
World Book Day is an opportunity to celebrate not only the joy of reading, but also the incredible diversity of literature that exists in the world. It’s a time to explore different genres and styles, to discover new authors and perspectives, and to share our favourite books with others.
At 11.30am today we will do just that during DEAL (Drop Everything and Listen). Teachers and librarians will read aloud for 20-30 minutes from a favourite book, poem or short story. The library will publicise a list of all the recommendations.
Whether you prefer classic literature or modern bestsellers, non-fiction or fiction, there is a book out there for everyone. This World Book Day, take the time to celebrate the written word and all that it has to offer.
