To become the Surrey Champion of Golf Champions at any age is some achievement – but to do so when you are only 13 is quite remarkable. The competition, which started back in May, brought together the individual Ladies Club Champions of Surrey in a scratch matchplay knockout format. Ellie, representing Camberley Heath GC, defeated her opponent from Epsom 4&3 in the final, held in early October at one of the most challenging Surrey courses. Ellie becomes the youngest ever winner of the tournament, ahead of both Old Wellingtonian and Sky Sports commentator Inci Mehmet, and Ladies European Tour star Annabel Dimmock, by some 3 years.

Ellie is no stranger to golfing glory: over the past few years she has put together a string of notable successes, securing top ten finishes at the R&A U14 and U16 Championships, winning the U14 Tyrell Hatton Junior Masters, and gaining selection for the U18 England Regional squad for the second year running. Ellie started playing when only five, and now plays off scratch, the reward for many hours honing her game both on the course and the practice greens.

Since joining Wellington in September, she has been both impressed and delighted by the facilities available to her at the College. “The coaching here is brilliant”, she says “as is the course and the computerised simulator in the adjoining clubhouse. There are literally all the tools here anybody could ever want if they are serious about improving their game. I’ve also been grateful for the support my teachers give me: if I have to miss lessons for matches, they make sure I’ve got everything I need to help me catch up with my work.” When asked about her golfing ambitions she is quite clear: “I hope one day to turn professional, but before then I’d love to go to University in the USA – Stamford in California is my dream.”

Many congratulations Ellie and judging by the comments of some notable golfing judges, she is certainly on course to make her dream come true.
