Friday Night Lights events are a highlight of the Wellington Sports calendar, designed to showcase different teams and causes. In the latest evolution of the event, we welcomed visiting pupils from Wellesley and St Neot’s Prep Schools to join our pupil supporters. With the addition of a dynamic light show and smoke machines, it’s fair to say the RDC felt every bit as electrifying as a Super League arena—for our U15 A team and their opponents, St George’s Weybridge.

What a spectacle the teams delivered for our visiting supporters and the passionate Wellington crowd! From the opening whistle, Wellington took control, establishing a commanding lead in the first two quarters. Exceptional shooting from Willow and standout defensive performances from Ella and Lily extended the advantage, sending the team into half-time in a dominant position.

St George’s Weybridge, however, rose to the challenge in the second half, adapting to the game’s intensity and the electric atmosphere. Wellington held a 22-15 lead going into the third-quarter break, but SGW came out firing in the final period, going on an early scoring run to level the match.

With the game on a knife-edge, both teams traded goals in a thrilling, end-to-end finale. Wellington found themselves trailing by just one with 10 seconds to go. A crucial defensive effort saw them regain possession, but the clock ran out before they could convert, allowing St George’s Weybridge to edge a dramatic 27-26 victory.

Despite the narrow defeat, both teams can be immensely proud of their performance. The energy from the crowd created an unforgettable evening of sport—one that marks the beginning of an exciting new era for Friday Night Lights. We look forward to welcoming even more visiting supporters in the future!
