With 140 students of all ages taking to the stage, the annual Christmas Dance Show brought the GWA Theatre magically to life. This year’s production, themed on Tim Burton’s iconic The Nightmare Before Christmas, showcased 28 different choreographies and featured a variety of genres, such as contemporary, commercial, street, tap, acro, lyrical, and ballet.
Wonderfully compared by the voice-over expertise of Sixth Formers Bella C, Harry W, Isabel H, and Theo B, the action followed Jack Skellington, skilfully and energetically played by Morgan D and Luca J, as he discovered the true meaning of Christmas in his romantic pursuit of Sally, beautifully portrayed by Charlott D and Nat P. Sophie H, Keira B, Anissa M, Amara O, Elsie E, Bella S, and Ursie N all sparkled in their various roles, but, in truth, the night belonged to the ensembles, who filled the stage with talented, high-octane energy.
Dance at Wellington is for everyone, with around 100 students taking the subject academically at GCSE, IB, and A-level, and 22 co-curricular dance classes that all pupils may attend. In addition, workshops, visits, masterclasses, and a full ballet programme from Grade 4 to Advanced Grades ensure that Wellington dancers, whatever their level, get the chance to shine.
And shine they did on two wonderfully exuberant evenings in December that saw the packed audiences roaring their approval. Congratulations to all the dancers, and, in particular, to Wellington Dance supremos Clare Cook and Caroline Kenworthy for their commitment, hard work, and imagination in putting on the show. It is fitting that they should have the final word: their comments that “the dance team were incredibly proud of the 140 pupils who performed; their professional approach, exuberance, and wholehearted commitment to dance were evident throughout, making it a joy to work with all of them” are shared by us all.
