Wellington’s annual Community Choral and Concerto Concert is always a particular November highlight, and this year’s renewal provided yet another enchanting and memorable evening. The programme, which featured the first movement of Tchaikovsky’s Piano Concerto No.1 in B flat minor and the Brahms German Requiem, brought together Wellington students, many of our visiting music teachers, full-time members of staff, Wellington parents and the Crowthorne Choral Society.

The Tchaikovsky concerto, a passionate, demanding and virtuosic piece, saw Wellington sixth former, Oscar F play with great maturity and real understanding of the work, making the beautiful (and recently acquired) Fazioli Concert Grand sing with a variety of tonal colours. The interplay and connection between Oscar and the Orchestra, conducted by Simon Williamson with Susie Henwood as leader, was an absolute joy, and set the tone for the grand finale where the choir, comprising the Wellington College Chapel Choir, the Parents Choir and the Crowthorne Choral Society, sang the Requiem, the work featuring two professional operatic soloists Tom Humphreys (OW and current singing teacher) and Lara Marie Muller, the renowned German soprano.

It would be hard to imagine a more inclusive coming together of Wellington and the local community, the concert conclusive proof that music making of the highest calibre is alive and well in this corner of Berkshire.
